Coagulation Cascade


This step involves a series of enzymatic reactions that lead to the formation of fibrin, which strengthens the platelet plug.

The coagulation cascade has two initial pathways:

Extrinsic Pathway

Intrinsic Pathway

- Intrinsic pathway: Activated by contact with damaged vessel surfaces

These pathways converge into a common pathway, resulting in the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin, which then converts fibrinogen to fibrin[5].
